Cetacean Group / SWAN
ˇ@ˇ@ Cetacean Group, under the Society of Wildlife and Nature (SWAN), was founded in January 1997. The primary goal of the Cetacean Group is to raise public awareness of the important role that cetaceans perform in Taiwanˇ¦s natural heritage. This is accomplished through education and conservation, as well as through the support of cetacean research project, such as necropsy, tissue sample archives, and strandings, including graduate level research project. All data is maintained and archived as a complete database that is available for Taiwan researchers and scholars, as well as the international community. Cetacean Group was represented by Dr. Chou of National Taiwan University who had been in charge of cetacean investigation throughout Taiwan since 1991.

Cetacean Committee / SWAN
ˇ@ˇ@ In May 1997, due to increased public awareness, Cetacean Group developed into Cetacean Committee, which subsequently initiated volunteer training and started caring for live, stranded cetaceans along Taiwan coast

Taiwan Cetacean Society
ˇ@ˇ@ In 1998, the Taiwan Cetacean Society (TCS) was formally founded by Dr. Chou on the strength of SWAN. TCS is the first non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to conservation of cetaceans in Asia-Pacific region. The government with the collaboration of TCS organized the Taiwan Cetacean Stranding Network (TCSN) in 1996 to facilitate the quick response to all cetacean strandings alerts along the entire Taiwan coast.
