A Brief History of Conservation of Cetacean in Taiwan

1990 Started cetacean research after meeting in Peng-hu.
1992~94 To inquire about and investigate record of cetacean from fishermen in Taiwan and to collect other information of cetacean.
1994 a) ˇ§The Illustrated Handbook of Cetaceans in Taiwanˇ¨ was published.
b) Began responding cetacean stranding.
1996 a) Taiwan Cetacean Stranding Network (TCSN) was founded. b) Investigation of cetaceans off Hualien coast initiated.
1997 a) Systemic investigation of cetacean off east coast.
b) Whale-watching off east coast of Taiwan initiated.
c) Cetacean Committee under SWAN was founded.
d) Began Rehabilitation of Stranded Cetacean.
1998 a) Taiwan Cetacean Society (TCS) was founded.
b) Research of whale-watching impact initiated.
2000 A mature male Rissoˇ¦s dolphin, was released on Sep. 8. This is the first rehabilitated case released in Pacific Asia
2002 a) There were 18 full-time and 19 part-time whale-watching vessels in Taiwan. IFAW reported that the whale-watching development in Taiwan was the rapidest in the world.
b) Two stranded dolphins were rehabilitated and released. They were a juvenile rough-toothed dolphin and a juvenile pantropical spotted dolphin released in May and October, respectively.
